Questions and answers

What are the risks of running Java 8 or Java 11 in production today?
There are four risks, in order of urgency. First, security: versions outside the support cycle no longer receive vulnerability fixes, so every new CVE published becomes permanent in that environment. Second, compliance: security frameworks and corporate contracts require software within the vendor support window, and an expired version becomes an audit finding with a remediation deadline. Third, blocked evolution: anyone on Java 8 cannot run Spring Boot 3, and that closes doors in a chain reaction with libraries, frameworks and cloud services. Fourth, cost: modern versions deliver performance gains and lower memory consumption without rewriting code, so running an old version means paying more for the same processing.
Does Java 8 still receive security fixes?
It depends on the support model you have contracted. Java 8 left Oracle's free public support in January 2019. Since then, security fixes for Java 8 require an active commercial contract with Oracle. Companies running Java 8 without that contract are exposed to vulnerabilities with no fix available. Java 11 ended its free long-term support (LTS) in September 2023. The current LTS versions with active support are Java 21, released in 2023, and Java 25, released in September 2025, with at least 8 years of guaranteed support.
Does an outdated Java version fail a security audit?
Generally, yes. Frameworks such as ISO 27001 and PCI-DSS require production software to be within the vendor support cycle. A Java version without available security updates is a predictable finding in any serious audit. In the financial sector regulated by the Brazilian Central Bank, CMN Resolution 4.893 requires vulnerability management and technology risk control; running unsupported software is direct exposure to that requirement. The finding comes with a remediation deadline, and a remediation deadline has a cost.
My vendor says my system's Java cannot be upgraded. Is that true?
In most cases it cannot be upgraded that way, which is different from not being upgradable at all. The real blockers exist and are well known: dependencies with no compatible version, unsupported frameworks (Struts 1, old JSF, Spring 4), use of internal JVM APIs removed in newer versions, legacy application servers. All of them have a technical path: replacing the dependency, upgrading the framework in stages, or partial modernization with the system live. If you got the answer "it can't be done" without a list of the specific technical blockers, with dependency name and version, ask for that list. It is the test.
How do I find out which Java version my systems are running?
A version inventory can be done in three ways. The simplest is running java -version on the application servers. For environments with multiple services, observability tools such as New Relic, Dynatrace or Datadog identify the runtime version of every running application. For legacy systems without monitoring, the mapping requires server access and analysis of the deployment artifacts. NextAge performs this diagnosis as part of the onboarding process in any maintenance or migration project.
How long does a migration from Java 8 to Java 21 take?
It depends on the size of the system, the number of dependencies and the state of test coverage. Migrations of mid-sized systems (between 200 thousand and 1 million lines of code) usually take 3 to 6 months under an incremental migration model, with the system in production throughout the process. Systems with very outdated frameworks (Struts, Spring 3) or without test coverage may require 6 to 12 months. The real timeline is only defined after a technical inventory; any estimate without one is a guess.
Is it possible to migrate the Java version without stopping the production system?
Yes, as long as the migration is done incrementally. The process involves mapping incompatible dependencies, upgrading in stages with automated tests at every cycle, keeping the current environment stable while the new one is validated in parallel, and cutting over with a planned rollback. Systems without adequate test coverage need a prior instrumentation stage before the migration starts. Stopping the system to migrate is an unnecessary risk in most cases.
How do I choose a specialized Java company to take over my legacy system?
Seven objective criteria. First, how many Java developers the company has and how many are senior: a Java specialist is someone who maintains an installed base, not someone who has done one project. Second, whether it takes over legacy systems it did not write, which is where most software factories decline. Third, how many version migrations it has completed and in what timeframe: ask for the number, not the promise. Fourth, whether the SLA is in the contract with metrics and penalties, because an SLA without numbers is just talk. Fifth, how the takeover and shadowing period work: whoever has no transition method will learn on your system. Sixth, whether there is experience in your regulated sector, because banks, insurers and payment providers have audit requirements that change the way of working. Seventh, what happens if the lead developer leaves: if the answer is not a process, the risk has only moved.
What is the cost of not upgrading Java?
The cost has four components. Infrastructure: modern Java versions consume less memory and process more on the same hardware, so anyone on Java 8 pays more for it month after month. Security: an incident originating from a known, unpatched vulnerability has a response cost, a regulatory cost and a reputation cost. Compliance: an audit finding has a remediation deadline and, depending on the sector, a fine. Evolution: every month on an outdated version increases technical debt and makes the future migration more expensive; the system does not stand still, it falls behind.
How does NextAge develop Java projects?
NextAge assembles technical squads specialized in Java to develop projects with fixed scope, defined deadline and guaranteed SLA. The process starts with AI-assisted requirements mapping, moves through development with documented deliveries sprint by sprint, and includes code quality validation at every stage. The result is a Java project delivered with operational predictability and guaranteed technical quality from the first commit to production deployment.
